Course Description
Creatures of all shape and size and power. Artifacts, tools, and objects of mystical design and description. Lands and histories rife with creativity, uniqueness, mystery, and lore. These, and so much more, are staples of the fantasy genre. But how to stitch them together, utilizing that which fantasy readers come to expect while also undercutting those very expectations in new and exhilarating ways? In this course, which combines literary study and creative production, students will look at exemplary contemporary fantasy novels to dissect their use of these elements while also crafting material for their own fantastic texts.
